You can decide whether a just connected device, typically bluetooth or wired, is selected, i.e. whether it becomes automatically default audio output. Note that such event is triggered by OS, i.e. it works only for devices you physically connect, not the built-in ones.

Click "Change Value" button and set "Auto Select" to yes, if you wish to have the device auto-selected upon connection.
